One of the most common questions we hear at Inspire Salon is: what’s the difference between balayage and highlights, and which one should I get? Both are stunning techniques, but they deliver different results. The right choice depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and the look you’re going for.
What Are Highlights?
Traditional highlights are applied using foils. Your stylist wraps sections of hair in aluminum foil and applies lightener, which lifts those sections while leaving the rest untouched. The foils create heat and allow for precise, consistent results.
Highlights tend to produce a more uniform, structured contrast. The color change is more dramatic at the root level, and grow-out is more visible — which means more frequent maintenance appointments. For clients who like a bold, defined look and don’t mind coming in every 6 to 8 weeks, highlights are a strong fit.
What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a French technique where color is painted directly onto the hair by hand, without foils. The result is a softer, more natural gradient — lighter at the ends, darker at the roots. Think sun-kissed effect rather than structured contrast.
Because balayage grows out gradually and naturally, maintenance is more forgiving. Most clients come back every 3 to 4 months rather than every 6 to 8 weeks. If your schedule doesn’t allow frequent salon visits, balayage is usually the smarter long-term investment.
How to Choose
- Want defined, high-contrast color? Highlights.
- Want a soft, natural look with low maintenance? Balayage.
- Have fine hair? Highlights create visible dimension without weighing hair down.
- Have thick or coarse hair? Balayage works beautifully to create a lived-in look with depth.
- On a budget? Balayage often costs less annually since appointments are less frequent.
Can You Combine Both?
Yes — and many clients do. A technique called foilayage combines hand-painted balayage with strategic foil placement for maximum brightness and a more blended finish. It gives you the natural look of balayage with the lifting power of foils. It’s popular with clients who want both dimension and brightness without committing to high-contrast foil highlights.
Start With a Consultation
The best way to figure out which direction is right for your hair is through a color consultation. We’ll look at your hair texture, current condition, and goals before any color is applied. Our hair color and blonding services cover all three techniques — highlights, balayage, and foilayage.
American Salon has tracked balayage as one of the most-requested color techniques for several years running, and we see the same demand here in Lake St. Louis. But the right technique still comes down to your individual hair and goals.
After color, we typically recommend a service enhancement to seal and strengthen the hair shaft. Book a consultation with one of our color specialists to get started.
